Simple: power and fear. Masculinity still holds social capital, even in queer spaces.
A lot of it is also internalized homophobia, some of it is just plain misogyny, but mostly? It’s fear. Femininity disrupts. And that makes people uncomfortable.
Real power isn’t in performing masculinity its in refusing to let it define your worth.
the world told us that ‘being gay is already bad, don’t make it worse by acting feminine.’ and some of them listened. so now they think wearing a crop top is a crime, but paying a ‘straight’ man’s rent on onlyfans is perfectly fine. make it make sense. 😪
because masculinity is often treated like a resource. something to prove, defend, or hoard. for some gay men, rejecting femininity is a way to reclaim masculinity in a world that already questions it. the irony? in trying to escape one box, they just build another.
at the end of the day, masculinity and femininity are just ideas not opposing forces.
